Having cleared my wallet of unnecessary plastic prior to Zanzibar, I hadn\u2019t put it all back. One of the missing cards was my boat driving license, meaning that I had to make a swift run back home to pick it up. This had unexpected consequences.<\/font><\/span><br \/><span><font color=\"#000000\">On my return, I found two things: Brian in SP125 had departed to anchor on the wreck (Victoria Star) and also the GPS on SP312 had for some reason switched off its back light, rendering the screen completely invisible. This meant we had to find the others by dead reckoning. This wasn\u2019t as difficult as it sounds as the route is well known and Deira Islands (n\u00e9e Palm Deira) provide a reference. Just the same, after a couple of false sightings, I was relieved to find our fellow divers parked over the wreck.<\/font><\/span><br \/><span><font color=\"#000000\">The dive itself was not that remarkable. There was a large grouper around the anchor when Brian and Denis went down but this had unfortunately vanished by the time the rest of us went down. Peter and Connie spotted a crab nearby and there was a shoal of batfish at the stern. The viz was reasonable without being fantastic (say around 4m) but the current was non-existent.<\/font><\/span><br \/><span><font color=\"#000000\">For the second dive we went to Rob\u2019s Dhow, a wooden dhow that went down a couple of years ago and is now much broken up by sea conditions and human intervention (it\u2019s very close to the entrance channel to Mina Khalid). Before we got there, Brian and Denis did a bounce on an interesting signal about 200m away from the dhow. It turned out to be some pipes that were obviously a lost cargo, perhaps from the dhow when it went down. Interesting but not really a dive that we\u2019d all want to do.<\/font><\/span><br \/><span><font color=\"#000000\">Opinions on the viz on Rob\u2019s Dhow varied from \u201cnot that bad\u201d to \u201cnil\u201d. Peter and Connie were the only ones to find the anchor line, largely because they never really left it. Everyone else needed SMB\u2019s. To be fair to Rayan and Ghenwa, they were tasked with freeing the anchor as soon as they went down so they had no choice. I elected to give this one a miss.<\/font><\/span><br \/><span><font color=\"#000000\"><br \/>\u200bAnyway, a good day. Good to have two boats out and to welcome Ghenwa and Steffen who were making their first dives with us.
